In 2023, Vermont enacted a 72-hour waiting period. The waiting period begins from when the dealer receives a notification from the FBI that the buyer has passed the background check, e.g., when the dealer receives a unique identification number for the transfer from the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).1 This waiting period does not apply to purchases from a gun show.

If a dealer has not received a unique identification number for the transfer within 7 days of contacting NICS, the dealer may transfer the firearm nonetheless.2
