Gun Violence Prevention Organizations Partner to Research and Develop New Policies to Reduce Gun Violence
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence and Americans for Responsible Solutions, a gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, retired combat veteran and NASA astronaut Mark Kelly, announced a partnership this evening at an annual dinner hosted by the Law Center that marked the organization’s 21st anniversary.
“Since Newtown, the public has rallied in support of strong new policies to keep people safe from gun violence. Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly are at the forefront of this energy, unifying millions of Americans who are demanding solutions to this public health crisis facing our nation,” said Robyn Thomas, Executive Director of the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. “We are immensely proud to partner with Americans for Responsible Solutions because we know that together we are stronger. As partners, we have a tremendous opportunity to develop and enact smart, legally-sound solutions that will keep our communities safe from gun violence.”
The Law Center honored Captain Kelly and Congresswoman Giffords for their courageous leadership in the gun violence prevention movement before Kelly announced the partnership in a speech highlighting the two organizations and the collaborative opportunities of the partnership.
“Gabby and I are excited about partnering with the Law Center to Prevent Violence to help fight for smart laws that reduce gun violence. The unmatched expertise and analysis of the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, combined with the hundreds of thousands of Americans that ARS represents, will help us restore some balance to the debate about our gun laws,” said Captain Mark Kelly, Co-Founder of Americans for Responsible Solutions. “Our shared commitment to commonsense solutions, to reasoned, fact-informed debate, and to making our communities safer from gun violence makes this a natural and exciting partnership.”
The partnership will focus on providing information to local and state leaders on gun laws that save lives, which will include recommendations for a framework of laws and policies that states and local governments can adopt to help reduce gun violence in their communities.
The Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence (formerly known as the Legal Community Against Violence) was founded after the 1993 mass shooting at a law firm in San Francisco that left eight dead. Today, it is the only national law center focused on providing comprehensive legal expertise in support of gun violence prevention. As a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, the Law Center is dedicated to preventing the loss of lives caused by gun violence by providing trusted, in-depth legal expertise and information on America’s gun laws.
Americans for Responsible Solutions (ARS) was founded by Congresswoman Giffords and Captain Kelly in January 2013 in the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting to find sensible ways to reduce gun violence and encourage elected officials to enact responsible firearms policies that protect the Second Amendment.
