In 2022, New Jersey enacted a law explicitly stating that a permit to carry a handgun does not authorize the holder of the permit to openly carry.¹

New Jersey allows the open carry of long guns (i.e. rifles and shotguns) if the possessor has a valid Firearms Purchaser Identification Card.² New Jersey prohibits any person from knowingly possessing a loaded long gun, with certain exceptions.³
