Maine law prohibits knowingly possessing a machine gun; however, this prohibition does not apply to machine guns manufactured, acquired, transferred, or possessed in accordance with federal law.1 Federal law generally allows the possession of machine guns manufactured prior to May 19, 1986 so long as they are registered. Maine law restricts local law enforcement’s authority to deny the transfer and registration of a machine gun if an applicant meets certain minimal criteria.2
