In 2021, Virginia enacted a strong package of strong gun safety laws, but there remains much more the state should do to protect its communities from gun violence.

This package of gun safety bills included universal background checks, an extreme risk protection law, stronger protections for victims of domestic violence, and meaningful investments in community violence intervention programs. In 2021, Virginia had the 19th lowest gun death rate among the states. Virginia also supplied crime guns to other states at the 12th highest rate among the states. Virginia exported crime guns at nearly twice the national rate and three times the rate at which it imported crime guns from other states.
