SAN FRANCISCO – On Wednesday, June 25, 2014, former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, retired Navy combat veteran and NASA astronaut Mark Kelly, will be honored for their courageous work to prevent gun violence at the annual event marking 21 years since the mass shooting at 101 California Street in San Francisco and the founding of the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, a non-profit research and policy organization.
Oakland-based violence prevention organization Youth ALIVE! will also be honored for their innovative and effective efforts to intervene in the cycle of gun violence in the Bay Area and beyond. In addition, the law firm Farella Braun + Martel LLP will receive the Law Center’s Pro Bono Partner of the Year award for its extraordinary pro bono defense of the City of Sunnyvale, California in two separate law suits challenging new voter-backed gun safety measures.
The Law Center’s Courageous Leadership Award, which will be presented toCongresswoman Giffords and Capt. Kelly this year, has been awarded to many distinguished guests in the history of the annual event. Other awardees have included U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein, filmmaker Michael Moore, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno, and The Washington Post Op-Ed Columnist E.J. Dionne Jr..
The Law Center’s Anniversary Dinner is well-known in the San Francisco legal and business community and is the largest annual gathering of supporters of gun violence prevention nationwide.
