GIFFORDS LAW CENTER’S 29th ANNIVERSARY celebration

HONORING SENATOR CHRIS MURPHY
An In-Person and Virtual Event
Sunday, September 18
2 pm Pacific/5 pm Eastern

Pier 27, San Francisco

Twenty-nine years ago, a gunman stormed into San Francisco law firm Pettit & Martin, killing eight people and injuring six others. In the wake of this tragedy, the Bay Area legal community banded together to improve the state’s gun laws. Today, Giffords Law Center is a leader in the national gun violence prevention movement, and California has some of the strongest gun laws in the country.

Every year, our supporters gather to honor those we lost at the 101 California Street shooting and the thousands of Americans who die from gun violence annually. We reflect on the past and look ahead to the challenges and opportunities to come—and remember that we wouldn’t be where we are today without your support.

HONOREES

SENATOR CHRIS MURPHY
2022 Courageous Leadership Award

Senator Chris Murphy is one of our nation’s hardest-working gun safety champions. Just weeks following his election to the Senate in 2012, the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting took place, and Murphy made protecting our communities and families from senseless gun violence a cornerstone of his mission. This year, in the wake of mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde, Murphy led negotiations to pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which became the first significant federal gun safety bill signed into law in nearly 30 years. We are thrilled to recognize Senator Chris Murphy’s sustained efforts to prevent gun violence and ensure a safer future for all Americans.

GARDEN PATHWAYS
2022 Lifesaving Service Award
Garden Pathways is one of just a few organizations fighting gun violence in and around Kern County, which has had the highest homicide rate of any county in California since 2016. Its focus on community violence intervention (CVI) and prevention has saved lives, and this year it joined forces with Giffords to help implement stronger CVI programs. We are deeply grateful for Garden Pathways for its tireless efforts to prevent community violence.

KAPLAN HECKER & FINK LLP
2022 Odgers Pro Bono Award
It was our honor to have our exemplary partner Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP draft our amicus brief in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, the most significant Second Amendment case to reach the Supreme Court in more than a decade. The firm has provided Giffords Law Center with exceptional pro bono support, including its memo outlining potential litigation under New York’s new public nuisance law, and we look forward to finding opportunities to leverage that and similar laws in other states in the future.

CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY

GETTING OFF THE SIDELINES

Saving lives from gun violence isn’t only the responsibility of politicians or private citizens—more and more, the private sector is showing the courage to fight for a safer future. New research shows that customers want companies to take clear, decisive action on the social issues that matter to everyday Americans.
