Louisiana has some of the country’s weakest gun laws and has repeatedly suffered some of the highest gun death rates. Enacting even modest gun safety legislation would go a long way to improve community safety in the state.

In spite of its general lack of firearm regulation, in recent years the state has enacted laws to strengthen some protections for survivors of domestic violence. In 2021, Louisiana had the second highest gun death rate among the states. Louisiana also supplied crime guns to other states at the 16th highest rate among the states. Louisiana exported crime guns at nearly twice the national rate.
